There is a lot to know before planning this trip! Here are some of the top Tips to keep in mind when booking:
- This train trip is typically a 2 night trip starting in Chicago, IL and ending in Emeryville, CA.
- The first night on the train from Chicago is VERY BUMPY!
- After going on the train if I were to do it again, I would go from Denver, CO to Sacramento, CA. This is the most beautiful section of the train and you will not be missing anything from Chicago to Denver or from Sacramento to Emeryville.
- Amtrak does offer a Bid-Up program where you can bid for an upgrade. We booked a Roomette and placed a Bid to a Bedroom which was accepted at +-$350.00 additional when booking a room would have cost +-$1000.00 more when initially booking.
- Pack lite! There is not a lot of storage space in the Bedrooms, let alone the Roomettes so leave the big luggage at home.
- Bring Snacks! Our food experience was not the best and their menu did not change so having snacks you like can really help.
- Make sure to bring cash for tips and any onboard concessions.
- If you are flying back home make sure to leave PLENTY of time from the train’s arrival to when your flight departs! Amtrak is always late, Our Train arrived 4+ Hours late.
- Bring flipflops for the shower and room! Trust me when I say you do not want to be walking barefoot on those floors!
- Bring air freshener, the room is small and you want to be sure it smells nice specially with the bathroom in the small room.
- Bring a multiplug/Power Strip. There are not many plugs in the room and you want to be sure you can charge your devices.
